When a sling is not enough
A transfer sling relies on the survivor bearing some weight through their legs — even if it is only 20–30 percent. If the survivor's knees buckle completely, if they have no leg participation at all, or if the caregiver is physically unable to lift even partial weight safely, a sling becomes a back injury waiting to happen.
The powered sit-to-stand lift fills that gap. The device takes the full weight of the survivor. The caregiver operates controls, not muscles. The survivor is supported in a standing sling or harness that maintains posture and prevents shoulder strain.
Powered vs hydraulic: which is right for home use
Hydraulic lifts are cheaper and do not require an electrical outlet, but they require the caregiver to pump a handle — which is still physical work and can be difficult for a smaller caregiver with a larger survivor.
Powered lifts use an electric motor to raise and lower the survivor. A single caregiver can operate them with one hand on the controls. The tradeoff is cost (typically $200–600 vs $100–200 for hydraulic) and the need for a nearby outlet or charged battery.
For home stroke recovery: powered is almost always the better choice. The goal is to remove physical strain from the caregiver so transfers happen consistently, not just on days when the caregiver feels strong enough.

Most home sit-to-stand lifts are rated for 300–450 lb. Verify the capacity against the survivor's current weight plus 10–15 percent margin — a survivor who has gained weight from reduced mobility needs the higher rating.
Base width matters for fitting under beds and wheelchairs. Measure the clearance under your bed frame and the seat height of your primary chair before ordering. A lift that cannot slide under the bed is useless for bedside transfers.
Insurance and Medicare coverage
Medicare Part B covers patient lifts as Durable Medical Equipment when prescribed by a physician as medically necessary. A face-to-face exam and a written order are required. Coverage is typically 80% of the Medicare-approved amount after the Part B deductible.
The key phrase for the physician's order: "patient is unable to bear weight through lower extremities and requires mechanical assistance for safe transfers." Your PT or OT can write the letter of medical necessity that supports the order.

Do I need a lift if I already have a gait belt?
A gait belt is for guarding and guiding during transfers where the survivor can bear most of their weight. A lift is for transfers where the survivor cannot bear weight or the caregiver cannot safely manage the load. If the survivor's knees buckle or the caregiver strains visibly, it is time to step up to a lift.
Can one caregiver operate a powered lift alone?
Yes — that is the primary advantage. A powered lift is designed for single-caregiver operation. The caregiver positions the sling, attaches the lift hooks, and operates the raise/lower controls. No lifting or straining is required.
How much space does a sit-to-stand lift need?
Most models require a 3-foot radius of clear floor space around the bed or chair for safe maneuvering. The base slides under the bed or chair, and the mast pivots to position the survivor over the destination seat. Measure your bedroom before ordering.
Is a Hoyer lift better than a sit-to-stand lift?
A Hoyer (full-body sling lift) is for complete non-weight-bearing transfers — the survivor is lifted while lying or seated and moved without standing. A sit-to-stand lift brings the survivor to a standing position, which maintains bone density, circulation, and the psychological benefit of upright posture. If the survivor can tolerate standing even briefly, a sit-to-stand lift is preferable.
