Module 3 & 4 · The Brace & Gear System

Bracing, Balance & Ankle Training for Foot Drop

Foot drop will teach you to hate carpet edges and door thresholds. A brace isn't surrender — it's what lets you put in the volume of steps that actually rewires the signal. And once the brace is doing its job, balance and calf work is where the real progress happens: unstable surfaces, calf stretch, ankle drills, the boring reps that quietly rebuild the platform you walk on.

This page covers both halves of that system together, because in my own recovery they were never separate — the brace bought me the steps, and the balance work is what eventually let me need the brace less.

What To Actually Look For

Soft brace vs. rigid AFO

A soft brace like the Dosh is discreet and comfortable for all-day wear but offers less structural support than a rigid, clinically-fitted AFO. If your foot drop is severe, talk to your PT about whether you need a prescription AFO in addition to anything here.

Progress the surface, not just the reps

A flat floor stops challenging your balance system after a while. The progression that worked for me was: stable floor, then a foam pad, then a wobble board — each one forcing new corrections instead of grooving the same pattern.

Calf tightness is a silent blocker

Spasticity tightens the calf constantly, and a tight calf quietly sabotages gait work even when the brain signal is coming back. Stretching it isn't optional extra credit — it's part of the main program.

Frequently Asked

FAQ

Can a soft AFO brace actually help with foot drop?

Yes, for mild to moderate foot drop a soft brace can provide enough lift to reduce tripping and allow more normal gait practice. For more severe drop, a rigid, professionally-fitted AFO is usually necessary — ask your PT which category you fall into.

What balance equipment is best for stroke survivors just starting out?

Start with a flat foam balance pad before progressing to a wobble board. The pad is forgiving enough to use safely near a wall or counter; the wobble board should wait until your balance reaction time has improved.

Why does calf stretching matter for stroke recovery?

Spasticity commonly tightens the calf and Achilles on the affected side, which can quietly undermine gait training even as neurological recovery progresses. Regular stretching keeps that tissue from becoming a secondary barrier to walking well.
